Iceland Cruise 2024 - Day Five - 6/18/2024
Grímsey - Iceland

Day Five of our Iceland Cruise 2024 brought us to the enchanting island of
Grímsey, Iceland’s northernmost inhabited territory, nestled in the Arctic Ocean. As we stepped ashore, we were greeted by the unique charm of this remote island, where the Arctic Circle itself runs through its rugged terrain.

Our adventure began in Sandvik, the island’s sole village located near the harbor on the southwestern coast. This quaint settlement, home to about 85 residents, offered a glimpse into life on this isolated yet thriving community. From here, we ventured southward, taking in the lush green hillsides adorned with moss and grass—a surprising burst of color against the stark Arctic backdrop.

Circling the coastline revealed another side of Grímsey: towering basalt cliffs alive with seabirds. Puffins, Arctic terns, and razorbills filled the air with their calls, creating a symphony that echoed across the island. These cliffs are a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.

One of the highlights of our visit was crossing the Arctic Circle itself—a bucket-list experience marked by a movable monument called
Orbis et Globus. This massive stone sphere symbolizes the shifting position of the Arctic Circle due to Earth’s axial changes, making our crossing even more memorable as we stood at this geographical milestone.

Grímsey’s natural beauty is complemented by its cultural quirks. The midnight sun illuminated our journey, as June’s endless daylight allowed us to explore without pause. The island also boasts a rich history of chess-playing and fishing traditions, alongside modern conveniences such as guesthouses, a café, and even a nine-hole disc golf course.

Whether marveling at seabirds nesting on cliffs or simply soaking in the serene isolation of this Arctic gem, Grímsey offered an unforgettable day filled with wonder and discovery
